THOMAS W. JONES

DAILY-TIMES ENTERPRISE
THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA
24 JULY 1894 pg 1
--------------------------------------

ASLEEP AT GREENWOOD

The gates at Greenwood's family cemetery swung open yesterday afternoon to
admit another inmate.
On Sunday night, at a quarter past eight o'clock, Mr.Thomas W. Jones died at
the residence of his sister, Mrs. Mattie Davis, in this city. He had been
stricken with paralysis a short time before and his death was not unexpected.
All that medical skill and and tender nursing could do was done to
alleviate his last hours. Surrounded by his wife, children and relatives, the
brave spirit which had battled with the world for more than half a century,
weary with the struggle, succumbed to death. He met it without a murmer.

The deceased was born at Greenwood on the 9th day of February 1839 and would
have been fifty six years old had he lived until his next birthday. He was the
son of the late Thomas Jones and Mrs. Lavenia Jones.

With the chivalry and flower of the southern youth, he enlisted in the 1st
Georgia Regiment in 1861 and served in the army until the flag of the
Confederacy was folded away forever. He was married to Miss Ella Capers on the
9th day of April. 1865, the day before which Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
Not knowing of the collapse of the confederacy, the young soldier and
bridegroom of a day, left home to resume his place in the army.
Mrs. Capers was a daughter of the Rev. Thomas Capers and a niece of Bishop
Capers. She, together with eight children, four boys and four girls, survives
husband and father.

Since the war, the deceased has given his attention to planting. He was a
fond and loving husband, a most devoted father and a citizen without reproach.

In the Shadow of the old homestead where he first saw light, he sleeps with
his kindred. The funeral took place from the residence of Mrs. Davis on
Crawford St. and was conducted by Dr. Thompson of the Methodist Church
assisted by Rev. J.O.A. Branch. Quite a number of relatives and friends
followed the remains to their last resting place. The bereaved and sorely
stricken family have the heartfelt sympathies of a large circle of friends in
this, their hour of sorrow.

May the great healer tenderly bind up their broken hearts.
