The Cairo Messenger, Friday, March 26, 1915
Mr. J. A. Hudson Passes Away

Early last Friday morning just as the first rays of light were advanced over
the eastern horizon, the spirit of Mr. John Alston Hudson took its flight from
this world to the great beyond. Although his health has been failing for
several months past, and his condition had become so grave that his life had
been dispaired of for more than a day, yet his death brought the deepest sorrow
to his family and friends. Mr. Hudson was born March 13, 1855 in Thomas county
where he lived until he became a grown man, when he moved to this city, then a
small village, and has since made this his home.

On July 26, 1874, he was happily married to Miss Susan Witt at her home near
Thomasville. To this union God gave eleven children, all of which survive the
father except one which died at a tender age. In April 1879, Mr. Hudson with
his family came to Cairo to live and since that time in the early days of its
settlement to its present state he has been closely identified with the growth
and development of the town. For a number of years, Mr. Hudson had conducted a
harness and shoe shop on South Broad street. By hard work and the exercise of
good business methods his business had enlarged until it was necessary for him
to arrange larger quarters, so last year the little wood structure was replaced
by a commodious two story brick building which represents the efforts of his
labor.

In the death of Mr. Hudson, the town and community has lost one of its pioneer
citizens, one who has watched its growth with interest and pride, and one who
stood ready to place his shoulder to the wheel and push when the hill was to be
climbed. He was a man of Christian character and his works will abide here to
help and bless humanity.

He is survived by his wife and the following children: Robert, Floyd, Margaret,
Mrs. T. F. Graves, Mrs. J. E. Connell, Mrs. H. J. Hart and J. W. Hudson of this
city. Mrs. G. F. McLendon of Lainey, Ga., Mrs. R. A. Beard of Naylor, Ga., and
H. A. Hudson of Thomasville.

The funeral took place at ten o'clock Saturday morning at the family residence
and was conducted by his pastor, the Rev. W. L. Wright of the Methodist church,
assisted by Dr. Wynne of the Baptist church. Interment followed at the family
plot in the city cemetery. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers:
Messrs. J. M. Poulk, K. Powell, K. P. Wight, C. G. Stephens, F. T. Brown, and
Wh. Searcy.
