Hon. John F. Howard, Tax Assessor
For Thomas Co. Died Wednesday

The community was shocked on Wednesday last to learn that John F. Howard had
died at his home near this city. Mr. Howard had only been ill for several days
and his death was the first intimation that his friends received of his
illness. There was no more popular man in the entire county than John Howard,
and his demise is a most untimely and unfortunate loss. He leaves five little
orphan children, their mother having died some two years ago. Mr. Howard was a
man of frail health, and the attack of pneumonia was doubtless brought on by a
severe wetting he received only about ten days ago. He was 49 years of age and
was born and reared in Thomas county, and was serving his second term as Tax
Assessor. He was an efficient and capable officer, and by his close attention
to his duty had materially increased the taxable values of the county. He was
a kindly and Christian gentleman, loved and honored by his friends. He will be
sadly missed, both as a man and an officer. His five little children are left
alone in the world except for the protection of their uncle, Mr. George Howard,
and the sympathy of the whole county goes out to them in their hour of sorrow
and distress. May the Good Father who watches over us all care tenderly for
the little orphans who are left alone to struggle with many and multiplied
vicissitudes of life.
