DEATH OF EDWIN TRALOMA DAVIS
============================

19 APRIL 1879
THOMASVILLE TIMES
THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA
====================
.... "DIED".........

At his residence, in this city, at a quarter past three o'clock on Monday
evening, the 14th inst., Capt. Edwin T. Davis, in the 36th year of his age.It
is indeed, a painful task to the writer to pen the above lines; for among the
earliest of his acquaintances in Thomasville, was the subject of this sketch.
The acquaintance early ripened into a friendship that lasted, unbroken, until
severed by death. In the social circle; in the office; in the busy, bustling
scenes of everyday life; in the Sunday school room, we met and knew him
intimately, and a more unselfish, noble, generous hearted man, we have never
known. The plaintive cry of want and the wail of distress, ne'er fell upon an
ear more keenly attuned to the woe of others, or touched a heart more ready
to respond to a good cause. As a citizen, he was public spirited and
progressive. As a soldier, he was brave and generous; as a member of the
church, he was zealous and consistent; as a friend, he was faithful and true;
as a father, he was loving and kind and as a husband, devoted and tender. When
the black clouds of war darkened southern skies, he was among the first,
though then, but a youth, to fly to arms. Enlisting in Capt. L.C. Bryan's Co.
57th Ga. Vol, he served through the long and bloody struggle and only
surrendered when the last ray of hope had faded. No duty was ever too
hazardous for him to perform. Dangers had no terror for him. He won his
epaulettes on bloody field & wore them to the end untarnished. He made
Thomasville his home at the close of the war. In 1867 he married Mrs. Mattie
T. Jones, youngest daughter of the late Thomas Jones, Esq.
The wife, with two bright little girls survive the husband and father.
As president of the South Georgia Fair Association and as a member, for many
years, of the Executive Committee, State Fair,he made an enviable state wide
reputation.

The sad funeral services took place in the Baptist Church, of which he was a
member. on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. The church was draped in deep
mourning and filled with relativesd and sympathizing friends.The Rev. Mr
Golden read from Job,14:1-16 Psalms, 103;13-16, John 11;24-27;  Rev.20;6;21;4-
9-10-22-23;22;1-7 and from first Corinthians, 11;55-58. A few appropriate
remarks and a fervant prayer followed. Before leaving the church the choir
sang, 'Nearer My God to Thee.' During the singing, the teachers of the
Sabbath School and members of the Bible class went forward and deposited
wreaths of flowers on the casket. The scene was a very touching one. Many
eyes unused to weeping were suffused with tears. The remains were escorted to
the church by a detachment of the Thomasville Guards, of which the deceased
was an honorary member. A large cortege followed the remains to the family
burial ground near Mrs. Lavinia Jones, where they were laid away by loving
hands,there to sleep untilthe last great day.
After all:
"Death's but a path that must be trod,
if man would ever pass to God.
In the language of Heber:
"Thou art gone to the grave,-but 'twer
wrong to deplore thee,
When God was thy ransom, thy guardian,
thy guide;
He gave thee, and took thee, and soon will
restore thee,
Where death hath no sting, since the Savior
hath died."
