Crash claims firefighter
By Patti Dozier
THOMASVILLE -- Charles Thomas "Tommy" Bryan's boss said it will be difficult to
find someone to fill the dedicated, enthusiastic firefighter/paramedic's
position.
Bryan, 29, a Thomas County government employee, died Tuesday night in a one-
vehicle wreck on Ga. 122.
"He was the type of guy that it didn't matter where he was or what he was
doing, he would always help someone," said Chris Jones, Thomas County fire
coordinator and Bryan's boss.
Bryan, driving a 1999 Dodge 1500 east on the state highway a few minutes before
midnight, was ejected from the pickup when the vehicle overturned.
The truck was negotiating a curve just west of Parrish Road when it traveled
onto the eastbound shoulder, and the driver overcorrected, said a Thomasville
Post 12 Georgia State Patrol spokesman.
The Dodge traveled across both lanes. "He overturned in the westbound ditch,
ejecting the driver," the spokesman said.
Bryan, a Pavo resident and a career firefighter at the new Boston Fire
Department, was traveling alone in the truck.
He went on the job at the Boston station Jan. 1, the first day full-time
firefighters went on duty at the county's three new fire stations.
He leaves his parents, grandparents, a brother and sister, a wife and three
sons.
Bryan was hired by county government in March 1998 as a firefighter. He was a
member of the Pavo Volunteer Fire Department, International Association of
Firefighters and the Georgia Firefighters Union.
When communitywide fire protection fell under the now-defunct Thomas County
Emergency Services Agency, Bryan put his skills to work on ambulance runs, as
well as in firefighting.
He could be depended on in any situation in which someone needed something,
Jones said.
According to Jones, Bryan specifically requested Boston duty because the town
receives a lot of calls, and he could put his paramedic skills to work.
Jones described Bryan as "a very good firefighter and a very good paramedic."
His beliefs about service and duty were evident not only when he was on the
job, he said, but around the clock.
