Edward Joseph Bates
Graveside services for Edward Joseph Bates of Thomasville are at 1 p.m., 
Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Father Thomas Murphy will 
officiate. Mr. Bates died August 5 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo. Born 
May 22, 1931 in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of the late William Joseph and 
Genevieve Gund Bates. On Aug. 18, 1951, he married Barbara Swann Bates, who 
survives. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was retired 
from the U.S. Marines after 20 years of service and then retired from Archbold 
Memorial Hospital. Other survivors include daughters, Teresa Mitchell of 
Thomasville, Karen Hummell of Orange Park, Fla., Monica Barnard of 
Thomasville, Donna Villalta of Saginaw, Mich., and Milissa Bates of 
Thomasville; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Jan Eldridge 
of Thousand Palms, Mo.; brothers, Paul Bates of Edwardville, Ill., Jimmy Bates 
of Joplin, Mo. and Robert Bates of San Diego, Calif. He was preceded in death 
by a sister, Mary Snider. Visitors may sign the online guest register at
