Captured Dispatches From Jeff Davis
Man Who Helped Win Battle of Gettysburg.
Daniel A. Carl,a well known citizen of Hancock, Md., and a brother of the late
William Carl, of Warfordsburg, died at his home on Monday morning, at the age of 59
years.
He served three years in the 6th U. S. Cavalry during the war of the Rebellion, and
had many thrilling experiences. On the first day of July, 1861, at Greencastle,
under Captain John Dahlgreen, he captured important dispatches from Jefferson Davis
to Gen. Robert E. Lee, from two Confederate mail carriers. Information obtained from
these dispatches materially assisted the Union generals in winning the great battle
of Gettysburg.
Mr. Carl leaves a widow and six children: five sons and one daughter. Prof. Ed., the
oldest, is principal of the public schools of Hagerstown, Md., and Frank is city
editor of the Cumberland (Md.,) Daily News.
Mr. Carl was a member in good standing of Warfordsburg Lodge No. 601 I. O. O. F., of
Hancock Camp P. O. S. of A., and of Martinsburg, W. Va., Post G. A. R. All these
societies attended his funeral on Tuesday, in a body, and assisted in the last sad
rites.
He served four years as postmaster of Hancock during Harrison's administration.
The funeral took place from his late residence at Hancock, Tuesday afternoon at 3
o'clock. Services conducted by Rev. C. M. Clymer, of the Presbyterian church.
