DEATH OF A VETERAN. - John Bender died at his residence in this place
on Wednesday of last week, aged 82 years and about 2 months. The
deceased was a soldier of the war of 1812.
For a period of fifty years he drove one of the stages at different
points along the Chambersburg and Bedford Turnpike road - sometimes on
the Eastern and sometimes on the Western end of the line; and estimating
that he averaged 20 miles per day during the __ days of each year, he
must have traveled during the period of his employment over 300,000
miles.
For a few years before the old gentleman's death he was out of
employment, having become too infirm to have the care of a team. For a
time after relinquishing his place, he seemed "like a fish out of water,"
and never cared to engage in any other employment. Few men in the State
have had such an experience on the road as had John Bender. - Fulton
Democrat.
