Mother of Solon and Postmaster Has Passed On

Mrs. W. M. Chappell succumbs after illness of more than a year; Was 
one of the oldest Wesleyan Graduates; burial Monday.

Mrs. W. H. Chappell mother of representative Allen Chappell and Postmaster
Frank Chappell of Americus, died at the home of her sister and brother-in-law
Dr. & Mrs. S. F. Howell Saturday night after an illness of a year.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the First Methodist Church with
Rev. H. T. Freeman of Valdosta, Rev. Joseph S. Cook, Rev. T. E. Davenport, and
Rev. L. M. Polhill of Americus officiating.
Before her marriage to William H. Chappell in May 1885, Mrs. Chappell was Miss
Florrie Allen, daughter of the late Capt. and Mrs. Thos. M. Allen. She was born
in Cuthbert, Ga. July 4, 1859, moving to Macon with her family at the age of 
twelve.
Mrs. Chappell attended Wesleyan College, Macon, graduating in a class of 32 in
1876 and during commencement week of Wesleyan in 1926 on the fiftieth anniversary
of her graduation she was a guest of the college. As one of the oldest living
graduates Mrs. Chappell took part in the pageant at Rivoli, near Macon
spading a shovel of dirt when ground was broken for new buildings of the
present college.
In 1936 Mrs. Chappell returned to the college as a guest on the sixtieth anniversary
of graduation, this time participating in the exercises of introducing the 
graduates of that year into the alumni by passing the lighted tapers to them
to carry on as the older ones passed away.
Mrs. Chappell was a member of the Methodist Church and until health prevented
was active in religious circles.
Surviving the deceased are four sons; Allen and Frank Chappell of Americus, W. H.
Chappell of Tampa Florida; and Dan Chappell of Miami, Florida; seven grandchildren;
Allen, Jr.; Frank, Jr.; Murray, Eloise and Billy Chappell of Americus; 
Dorothy and Dana Jean Chappell of Miami; Three sisters, Mrs. S. F. Howell and
Mrs. Hallie Allen of Americus; and Mrs. Bessie McDonald of Sumter; she is also
survived by six nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were T. F. Gatewood, Sr., Brown McLendon, John T. Taylor, Jr., T. M.
Furlow, T. ? Bell, Walter Brown and Dr. S. P. Wise.
Americus Undertaking Company had charge of the arrangements. Interment was in
Oak Grove Cemetery.

Florie Allen Chappell was my greatgrand mother and I have more Chappell Family information.
Also the old Gym at Georgia Southwestern is named in her honor.  There is a large 
portriat of her the hung in the gym that has been donated to the Windsor Hotel.
Her children were all politically motivated.  Allen was a State Rep. 
Frank ( my grandfather) was Postmaster of Americus and Dan ran for Gov of Fla in 
1934 and was also a State Rep.  Dan's obit noted that he was the Father of the 
Paramutual Betting in Florida.  He was big in horse racing and a charter member 
of the Fla. Horse Breeders Assn.
