Killed in the Streets

W.B. Buchanan, a former citizen of Buena Vista, Loses His Life in Birmingham

The Americus Times Recorder of Wednesday contains the following account of the
killing of W.B. Buchanan:

From all the accounts that could be gathered concerning the affair, it seems
that Mr. Buchanan was escorting a woman along one of the streets in the city,
and as they reached the market house Ben Stehlin, a member of the Birmingham
Fire Department, spoke to the woman in response to her salutation.

This angered Buchanan, who according to the woman's statement, addressed
Stehlin in a manner quite spirited. A quarrel followed between the two men
resulting in a blow from Stehlin, which struck Buchanan in the face, after
which they were clinched.

Stehlin being the stronger of the two pushed Buchanan against the wall, at the
same time striking him in the stomach and face. One of the blows proved fatal
and the young man feel heavily to the ground. A citizen who was passing saw
Buchanan lying in the streets and calling to Stehlin, who had gone inside the
market, the two carried him to a drug store nearby. Life, however, was already
extinct.

Stehlin denies hitting Buchanan in the stomach, but acknowledges striking him
two blows under the chin. He also says that Buchanan was trying to strike him
with knucks. Stehlin was locked up, and the woman was also held as a witness
against him.

Mr. Buchanan leaves a wife and little daughter, who are now with relatives
near Americus. He was about 35 years of age, and during his long residence in
Americus was very popular among a large circle of friends, to whom the
announcement of his tragic death will bring the keenest sorrow. He will be
buried in Birmingham this morning.

The mother and three sisters of the unfortunate man reside in Buena Vista, and
they have the sympathy of the people of this town and community in the great
trouble that has visited them.
