West-Jersey pioneer. (Bridgeton, N. J.) 1851-1884: October 20, 1860
Died near Cape May Court House, on the 1st inst., Mrs. Lydia H. Sharp, in the 36th
year of her age died of consumption
Four years ago this coming December, her husband, Capt. Alfred Sharp, was lost at
sea. All on board that ill fated vessel, the Lydia H. Sharp, found a watery
grave...She left Alexandria, Va., bound to Fall River but never reached the port.
Among that crew was also a brother of Mrs. Sharp. After days, weeks and months of
painful anxiety, she had to settle down to the awful conclusion that her husband,
heir companion, the choice of her youth was gone, lost, never to return...In May
last, believing that her death, was approaching, she left her former residence
(Mauricetown) and went to Cape May, that she might be under the care and protection
of her mother, or to use her own words, she went home to die...Her remains were
brought to Haleysville...
