Hinds County Gazette Unknown

  Col. J. F. H. Claiborne sends us
letter written from Vicksburg, Nov.
9, 1837, by John J. Hamilton, to Gen.
John A. Quitman, of Natchez, asking
that gentleman to loan him, Hamilton,
$2,000 to enable him to buy from Mr.
King, a one-half interest in the
Raymond Times newspaper.
The Gazette of to-day is a continuation
of the old Times, and hence the
letter is regarded as office property.
Mr. Hamilton states the annual net
profits of the office at $5,000, and
thinks the investment would be a
good one, especially for him, an easy
writer and a practical printer. We
are not advised as to the success of
Mr. Hamilton's call on Gen. Quitman,
but about that time Mr. N.G.
North purchased the half interest
which was offered for sale, and it is
reasonable to suppose that Mr. Hamilton
failed in his financial project.
Col. Claiborne informs us, in a private
note, that the same Mr. Hamilton at
one time published a paper in Vicksburg
called the Southern Mechanic,
and at a later period, perhaps 1835,
published a paper at Grenada. We
have no recollection of ever hearing
of him before.
