Hinds County Gazette July 1898

A FLAG RAISED

All the patriotism of the
surrounding country seemed to be
centered at Cooper's Well on
Monday, the 4th inst.
  In the presence of several
hundred people, and a mid the
booming of cannon, the stars and
stripes was raised and floated to
the breeze, on a poll a hundred
feet high. Mr. August Spengler,
one of the proprietors of
Cooper's Well presided as master
of ceremonies, while Capt. Floyd
Lee, of Raymond, managed the
artillery.
The orators of the day were
Hon. J.G. Spencer, who is a
candidate for congress from this
district and Hon. I. D. Wall, a
distinguished lawyer and district
attorney residing at Clinton, La.
They were introduced by Hon. A.
Puryear. Both delivered eloquent
and patriotic speeches,
dwelling particularly upon the
conspicuous part which Southern
heroes have played in making
the history of our great nation.
Just before the flag was raised,
the news came of the destruction
of the Spanish fleet at Santiago,
and the crowd went wild with
enthusiasm. There is no better
place for a celebration of this
kind than on the historic hills of
this celebration watering place.
In the evening a grand dress
ball was given, attended by the
youth and beauty of the surrounding
country.
