Hinds County Gazette 1879

CHARLTON REBELS RAYMOND FENCIBLES

---A call for a meeting of the surviving members of the Charlton Rebels, (Co.
K,) in Raymond, on the 29th of August, in addition to that published on the
first page of this paper, has been received. It is signed by the following
gentlemen: R. Charlton, Dr. L. White, Dr. G.W. West, T.I. Hunter, J.G.
Austin, Wm. Charlton, Farrar Morrison, A.M. McGowan, V.J. Waddill, A.G.Vaughn,
J.W. Neil, N. McNeil, J.P. Hackler, P.H. Noble. Simp. McGown, Monroe McGown
and Nick Williams.
---The surviving members of the Raymond Fencibles of 1861 will meet at
Raymond on Friday next, for the purpose of consulting with reference to the
propriety of a reunion. The company was about 100 strong when it left Raymond
in May, 1861, for Virginia, and we feel quite anxious now, after the fortunes
of the war and the lapse of 18 years, to know how many of those 100 noble
young men embracing at the time the flower of the youth and chivalry of this
vicinityremain in the land of the living, and who they are. We well remember
that the departure of the company left the Gazette office without a
compositor, a pressman, or a roller-boy. The office was cleared of every one
connected with it except the editor and well we remember that each one it
contributed to the ranks, filled a soldier's grave before the conflict
concluded. We sincerely hope the meeting on Friday may be well attended, that
a re-union may be agreed upon, and that the occasion may prove one of great
interest and enjoyment to the survivors as well as the community at large.
