Valerius' Two Wives

Made a Record Proving This Man a Bigamist

Lewis Valerius, a glassblower of this city, had a hearing before Justice Smith
here yesterday, on a charge of bigamy.

So carefully had the State prepared its case that Valerius was confronted with
the witnesses to his marriage to Tillie Turner in Millville in 1897, with a
certified copy of the return of that marriage as filed in a the office of the
registrar of marriages at Trenton; with Rev. J. H. Boyd, who united him in
marriage to Miss Maggie Crew, in this city, on the 17th of the present month,
and also with each of the two women who claimed him as her husband.

Since his arrest and up to yesterday Valerius declared that he was never
married to the woman claiming to be his wife No. 1, but when he was confronted
with the living witnesses of his marriage and the documentary evidence of the
same, he wilted and pleaded guilty.

He was committed in default $800 bail for his appearance before the Grand Jury.

Valerius was arrested in Bridgeton a week ago at the home of his first wife.
