Meeting For Temperance

Music and an Address by Rev. F. H. Shermer

The Prohibition Alliance held an interesting meeting in the W. C. T. U. rooms
last Saturday evening. Business pertaining to the organization was transacted
and then an entertaining programme was enjoyed. The audience joined in
singing 'America,' and then Miss Edith Hann recited 'The Naughty Irishman'
which was very funny and pleased all. The address of the evening was by Rev.
Frank H. Shermer, pastor of Pearl Street Baptist Church. He said that the
licensed saloons must go, and while we have victory to a certain extent, we
must not sit with folded arms and do nothing. Real temperance work has just
begun; the enemy will not relax his energy. God grant our city may be
impregnable to his assaults. He emphasized the need of law enforcement, the
importance of good men attending the Primary meetings and asserted that the
churches ought to be enthusiastic leaders in the temperance cause. The vocal
solo entitled, 'To the Breeze We Fling Our Banner' was nicely rendered by Muss
Lucretia R. Sheppard and was much appreciated. After the announcements had
been made the secretary, T. Algermon Cadwallader, made an appeal for new
members. Music by the quartette had to be omitted on account of illness of
some members.
