The Philisophians

President Mulford called the last meeting of the Philosophians under his
administration yesterday afternoon. After singing by the society, Chaplain
Hettinger led in prayer and Secretary Wallis called the roll. After the
reading of the minutes and the report of committees the new officers of the
society were sworn in by President Mulford.

They were as follows: -

President Lummis; vice president, Shoulders; secretary-treasurer, Huttenloch;
chaplain, Hettinger. President Lummin made a neat speech upon assuming the
chair and then appointed Professor Wells as critic, and Messrs. Newcomb,
Maguire and Shermer as judges for the debate.

The literary programme was unusually good. 'Current Events,' Mr Dubois, was
well given. Mr Haft's oration 'Barbara Frietchie' was nicely rendered. The
extemporaneous speech, 'Power of Cheerfulness,' by Mr. Harris, was filled with
philosophy, and was greeted with applause. The debate was 'Resolved, that
increase of wealth has a good influence on morals of society.' The affirmative
was taken by Mr. Ayars and the negative by Mr. Davis. The judges decided in
favor of the negative. The report of Mr. Wells as critic was filled with
helpful suggestions.

The society then adjourned until next Friday.
