Farewell Banquet to Prof. De Maris

Tendered by the Faculty of South Jersey Institute

Pleasant Social Occasion

The Institute's Retiring Musical Instructor honored by His Associate Teachers
Last Evening

Professor Charles H. DeMaris, who recently resigned as instructor in the
musical department of South Jersey Institute, was tendered a farewell banquet
by his associate teachers last evening. It took place in the dining room of
the school, and every member of the faculty was present. The arrangements had
been personally looked after by the ladies of the faculty and the result was
that extreme daintiness characterized the affair from beginning to end. The
table was spread in the dining room, and was a thing of beauty if it was not
of joy forever, for the time hastened by all too quickly.

In the center of the table was a large art vase of exquisite design, and this
was filled with carnations in the school colors of ruby and white. From this
to each cover, there were ribbons of the same colors, white for the ladies and
ruby for the gentlemen. The favors attached to these were blocks of chocolate
for the ladies and tiny cigars of the same toothsome material for the
gentlemen. An abundance of smilax was also used to great advantage in the
decorations. From the chandelier hung the S. J. I. pennants of the same colors.

QUOTATION CARDS

At each plate was a card containing some quotation or sentiment apropos to
each guest, and they were required to guess their respective places at table
in this way. That of Professor DeMaris was 'Fare thee well, for I must leave
thee,' and the others were equally appropriate or witty. As guest of honor he
also had an additional favor in the way of a bonbon box, made to represent a
Steinway grand concert piano, well filled with dainties. The menu consisted of
chicken salad served in lettuce, hot tea rolls, olives, celery, coffee,
charlotte russe in decorated cups and salted almonds. At the conclusion each
pulled the ribbon and found attached one of the carnations, which was put in
the hair or worn on the coat lapel, as the case might be.

There were no set toasts, but plenty of fun and merriment, and good wishes for
future success were expressed to Mr. DeMaris personally. He has always been a
favorite at school and his going is much regretted by all.

A social time was afterward enjoyed in the parlors, and the occasion was
enlivened by glee songs and so a song by Miss Dinsmore was enjoyed. Professor
DeMaris will leave for New York probably on next Saturday.
