Application For Pension As Father Of Soldier
Gardner Reynolds, aged 68, of Allegany Co., N.Y., pension application as father 
of Franklin M. Reynolds, a Pvt. in Company I commanded by Capt. Elias Horton in 
the 189th Regt. of New York Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Wm. W. Hayt, 
and who died whilst in the service at Philadelphia Hospital in the State of 
Pennsylvania on or about March 4, 1865 from small pox.  Soldier left no 
dependents; his mother died Jan. 25, 1864.  Deponent's post office is at Almond 
and his place of abode is on the rail road leading from Dunkirk to 
Hornellsville, about twenty miles from the county seat of Allegany Co.
   Adjutant General's Office stated that Franklin M. Reynolds, Private, appears 
to be present in company Oct. 31, 1864, City Point, Va.;  Dec. 31, 1864, near 
Hancock Station, Va.; Jan. & Feb. 1865, absent sick in Hospital at City Point 
company stationed Feb. 1865 before Petersburg, Va.  Died in Islington Lane 
Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. March 2, 1865 of "variola"
   Pension office: Soldier's parents married in 1830.  Pension rejected on the 
ground that the claimant was not dependent on the soldier at the time of his 
death, also that the soldier had a wife living at the time of his enlistment.

   Examining surgeon (filed Aug. 8, 1876): States claimant is a decrepid man of 
60 years of age & can do little, if anything, by labor.  Has known him 18 
years, but don't remember about his health - believes he was 3/4 disabled as 
early as 1864.  Has hydrocele, hernia and hemorrhoides.
 
   Jesse W. Prior (filed Oct. 4, 1876) swears to 20 years acquaintance; soldier 
made his home with claimant, except when hired out, and helped him in various 
ways, such as furnishing necessary provisions; claimant has earned about $20. a 
year; knows from personal acquaintance that for 15 years he has no property 
from which to derive anything,  He is broken in health and cannot earn anything.
   Ira Cutler (filed Dec. 16, 1876): he is well acquainted with the family.  
Claimant was poor & greatly relied upon soldier; frequently purchased from 
affiant necessaries for claimant's support.
   Henry W. Crandall (filed Dec. 16, 1876): Claimant poor & old.  Claimant was 
not able to labor in 1865 nor since.
   John C. Riley (filed Dec. 16, 1876): Claimant is an invalid, 70 years of 
age; could not have earned more than $40. per annum in 1865 and since.
   William H. Averill (filed Dec. 16, 1876): swears to 31 years acquaintance; 
worked with claimant frequently.  He is unfit to labor & has been since 
acquaintance, is poor and helpless
   Claimant - swears he cannot find letters soldier sent him with money - they 
must be lost; soldier also worked for one John Bailey who is dead.
Proof as to celibacy of soldier: 
   William Nephew (filed Nov. 15, 1875): has been acquainted with soldier for 
30 years & knows he left no widow or children
   Paxton Edwards (filed July 1, 1876): has known soldier for 25 years; never 
heard that he had married
   M. Thacher (filed July 1, 1876): swears soldier never married
Proof as to Legitimacy of Son:
   N.J. Reynolds (filed June 11, 1870); son of claimant; swears to sonship
   Wm. N. Reynolds (filed Nov. 15, 1875): Swears he is brother of the claimant 
& known parents lived together - they were married in 1830 or 1835 - knows 
soldier was their son.
Proof as to Death of Mother: 
   A.J. Reynolds (filed June 11, 1870): son of claimant; swears mother died 
Jan. 25, 1864
Proof as to Dependence and Support
   A.J. Reynolds (filed June 11, 1870): son of claimant; swears to father's 
inability & to contributions received from soldier since 1855
   J.M. Robinson, M.D. ((filed Nov. 15, 1875): has doctored claimant from 1858 
to 1858 - he had to be frequently tapped - he is old and feeble and unable to 
sustain himself by manual labor.
   Wm. H. Hagadorn, M.D.  (filed Nov. 15, 1875): He has doctored claimant since 
1870 and knows he is ruptured and afflicted with Hydrocele....
   William Nephew (filed Nov. 15, 1875): well acquainted with soldier for 
thirty years.  Soldier often said he did not know what his father would do if 
he did not assist him - the father was sick most of the time and unable to 
support himself.
   William H. Reynolds (filed Nov. 15, 1875): he is brother of claimant, who 
has been an invalid for a number of years and has no property
   John C. Riley (filed Nov. 15, 1875): he has known claimant for thirty years -
 he has no property - knows he is infirm and unable to labor - during past 20 
years affiant rented claimant a house but he has never been able to pay and 
rent, except a cow of soldier's - has to give him assistance to live

Application rejected again Sept. 28, 1877

Enlistment paper: Franklin M. Reynolds enl. at Hornellsville, N.Y. Sept. 7, 
1864; aged 31; born in Powell (sic) in the State of Vermont.  Farmer.  Mustered 
in for one year or during the war; Capt. Withers, 189th Regt., Sept. 20, 1864.

Discharge by reason of death of variola at Islington Hospital, Philadelphia.  
Franklin M. Reynolds, aged 31, born Ormel (sic), Vermont, 5'10", fair 
complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, by occupation a farmer.
