Cape May Ocean Wave, Wednesday, December 9, 1868
DIED.
TOWNSEND.-At Seaville, on Sunday morning, November 29th, Mr. Joshua Townsend.
Mr. Townsend was born in 1786, upon the plantation taken up by his G. G.
grandfather, John Townsend, in 1674. Upon a part of the same farm he lived
and died. His father died when he was a small boy, after which he lived with
his uncle, Richard Townsend, twelve or fifteen years, and then served an
apprenticeship with Richard Cresse, at the carpenter trade. At the age of 24,
he married Miss Sarah Schellinger, who died five months since.
He served his country as a volunteer soldier in the war of 1812, and was
soon promoted to be a captain, and afterwards a major. In the battle fought
at Cape Island in 1812, Mr. Townsend acted as colonel. In this engagement the
British gunboats were driven off with a loss, upon their part, of 13 men, two
of whom were officers of high rank.
In 1821-22 and 29, Mr. T. represented Cape May in the State Assembly, and in
1830 was elected to the New Jersey Senate. In 1840 he was a member of the
Electoral College which made General Harrison President.
For several years past he has lived retired from the tumult of the world,
devoting his time to rural affairs, and surrounded by a large number of warm,
personal friends. For many years he was a strong believer in the religion of
our Lord Jesus Christ. Those who knew him have no doubt of his personal piety
and of this thorough preparation for death and eternity. In his last illness
he often said that he had no desire to remain in this stormy world, but
desired rather to join mother - his wife - in her Heavenly home.
The funeral services took place on Tuesday a. m., at the Seaville Baptist
Church, and were attended by a large concourse of relatives, friends and
neighbors. Rev. A. J. Hires conducted the services and preached the sermon,
sided by Rev. J. A. Taylor: "The memory of the just is blessed."-Prov. 10:7.
