Author: JOHN SCOTT HOFF (2XG grandson)

CHANCEY J. TERRILL (1801 CT - Kirkwood, Henderson Co., IL 1 Aug 1872)
genealogical information: I descend from him through his son, JOHN L. TERRILL
(1833 Albany City, Albany Co., NY - Steady Run, Keokuk Co., IA 1907). I doing
my research, I noted that some of the data on the offspring of CHANCEY
(sometimes spelled "CHAUNCEY") J. TERRILL under ALAN JACKSON TERRILL is
incomplete, and I thought researchers might like to have more complete data
for their data bases. The following data on CHANCEY J. TERRILL is based on the
1850 Census data for Ashtabuhla Co., OH, and you can verify it there. In it,
there are 4 children listed for CHANCEY J. TERRILL and his wife "MARY ?". All
were born in Albany Co., NY. They were:
1. JOHN L. TERRILL - 30 May 1833 Albany Co., NY - 12 Nov 1907 Steady Run (Nr.
Hedrick), Keokuk Co., IA
2. ALLEN JACKSON TERRILL - 17 Apr 1828 Albany Co., NY - 15 Dec 1903
3. MARTHA E. TERRILL - b: 1830
4. AMY ANN TERRILL - b: 1833

I have not been able to learn of the fate of the two daughters listed to him
in that Census. There is another 1860 Census record on him in Henderson Co.,
IL, and in 1870 in Kewanee, Henry Co., IL. By 1870 all the children had flown
the nest and he was living alone with only his wife, Mary at that point, who
died in 1874, two years following his death.

Their son, (my maternal 1XG grandfather) JOHN L. TERRILL had 6 children with
wife ELIZABETH JANE POGUE:
1. EMMA "Emily" LAVERA TERRILL - 9 Jan 1875 Hedrick, Keokuk Co., IA (she is my
maternal grandmother, and she died in 1930 in a car wreck in Kansas)
2. MARY EMELIA TERRILL -11 MAR 1866 Agency, IA
3. MARTHA ANN TERRILL - 7 MAY 1868 Hedrick, IA
4. ELLA MAY TERRILL - 29 Mar 1870 E. Hedrick, Keokuk Co., IA
5. GEORGE WALTER TERRILL - 8 Nov 1872 Nr. Hedrick, Keokuk Co., IA
6. WILLIAM EDWARD TERRILL - 4 Dec 1864 Nr. Oquawka, IL

JOHN L. TERRILL's daughter, EMMA (my grandmother), married ROBERT LEROY SCOTT
of Hedrick, IA ~1899, and they had two children:
1. ROBERT ORION SCOTT. (1901 Hedrick, Keokuk co., IA - Redweed City, San Mateo
Co., CA ~1972). He had 3 sons, and two of them left children, which I have
well documented.
2. VALETTA FLORENCE SCOTT(b: 24 Jul 1912 Boise, ID). She is my mother. On 1
Sep 1934 in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, she married my father, JOHN RICHARD HOFF
(1909 - 1970). The two of them had 2 sons:

1. JOHN SCOTT HOFF - 2 Jan 1946 Des Moines, Polk Co. IA - Now living in
Chicago, IL (ME), and my brother,
2. ROBERT TERRANT HOFF - 4 June 1948 - Now unmarried and without children,
living in Washington, DC

I have two children:
1. JENNIFER JO HOFF - 13 Sep 1982 Hoffman Est., IL - Now living in Park Ridge,
IL and inschool. Unmarried and no children.
2. JOHN BARON HOFF - 29 Sep 1984 HOffman Est., IL - Now a junior at the Univ.
of Illinois in Champaign, IL. Unmaried and no children.

All of the above information is loaded on <Ancestry.com>. CHANCEY J. TERRILL
came from undocumented origins somewhere in "CT in 1801" (per the various
Census referred to), but thus far I have had no luck in identifying his
parentage. No "official vital records" are kept in Illinois before 1879, so
there is no "Death Certificate" on CHAUNCEY or his wife, MARY which might shed
some light on their exact dates and places of birth or parentage.

After Chauncey was known to have had a son born in Albany in 1828 and he
appeared in the 1829 Albany City Directory, he next appeared in Cleveland in
1846-47, as he appears in a Cleveland City Directory in the fine sheep and
goat hide tanning business (a "Morocco Dresser"), used for women's clothing of
the day and in book binding. By 1850 he was residing in Kingsville, Ashtabula
Co., OH with all 4 children (the eldest of which, ALAN JACKSON TERRILL, had by
then married, and he & his bride and he were residing with his parents). By
1860 he moved to and was residing in Henderson Co., IL., and by 1870 had moved
yet again to Kewanee, Henry Co., IL. He and his wife apparently made one more
move between then and when he died 2 years later in 1872 back to Henderson
Co., and he died and was buried just outside Kirkwood, Henderson Co., IL in
the Grove Cemetery. His wife, MARY died two years later on 1874, and was
buried with him.

So, that is the extended lineage on the CHAUNCEY TERRILL family and their
nexus with Albany, Ny in the very early 1800s. I have been very interested in
genealogy now for 3+ years and enjoy it. But I have certainly "hit the wall"
on trying to trace the oprigins or lineage of CHANCEY J. TERRILL or his wife,
MARY. Any ideas or help would be appreciated, and I haven't yet given up on
him. Again, I'll be glad to share anyting useful I can with you, as I have
tried to do above. Feel free to contact me directly
