The Ocala Banner. (Ocala, Marion County, Fla.) 1883-194?: November 02, 1917
H. N. Knoblock. News was received in Ocala Tuesday from Martin conveying the sad
intelligence of the sudden death of Comrade H. N. Knoblock, aged 77 years, his death
occurring at seven o'clock a.m. ; Just a few days before death fell upon Comrade
Joseph Shuford in the same way, as gently as a summer cloud. At our annual reunion
recently held in Jacksonville, we announced that Marion Camp, though one of the
largest in the state, had not a single death to report, but since its adjournment
"Father Time" seems to have unsheathed his scythe and is busy in making hasty in
roads upon the "vanishing thin grey line." Mr. Newton Knoblock was one of the best
known men in Marion county and was one of its most successful farmers. He was a
member of a pioneer family and himself was a citizen of the county for a number of
years ante-dating our civil war. At the outbreak of that unhappy event, he was just
in the full flower of young manhood and was among the first to respond to the call
to arms. He had the honor of serving in the ranks as a private - those brave and
dauntless men upon whom fall the impact of battle and the burden of the camp.
Comrade Knoblock was with the western army, served from the beginning to the end of
the conflict, participating in every battle in which his regiment was engaged and
never shirked a duty of any sort and served without ever a murmur or complaint. He
left on the archives of his country a spirit of courage and lofty valor that will
serve as a heritage for all coming time as an inspiration for the youth of our land.
He leaves to mourn his death a faithful wife and nine children: Mrs. W. M. Shockey,
Mr. J. H. Knoblock, Mr. J. J. Knoblock, Mr. V. E. Knoblock, Mr. J. N. Knoblock, Mr.
S. V. Knoblock, Mr. M. P. Knoblock, Mr. D. E. Knoblock, E. Knoblock, Mr. W. A.
Knoblock, and a whole community to share their sorrow. The remains were brought to
Ocala and were laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery.
