William, who was a Miller by trade, was 20 when he enlisted in the 49th PA
volunteers in 1862. He was killed in action on May 10, 1864, at the battle for
the Spottsylvania, VA. Court House. The Pennsylvania archives index card
describes him as 5' 6 1/2", light eyes, complexion, and hair. Letters written
by him to his sister were recently found and are reprinted in the book, "Dear
Sister", by the Uwchlan Township Historical Society.

William joined the same regiment as his brother, Joseph B. Downing, and
cousin, Benjamin H. Downing. These three were all direct descendants of Thomas
Downing, namesake of Downingtown, PA.
