Joseph B. Downing served during the Civil War in the same regiment as his
brother, William H. Downing, and cousin, Benjamin H. Downing (49th PA
Volunteers). He mustered out in 1865 at the end of the war with the Brevet
rank of Captain. The Pennsylvania Archives shows him at 5' 7", light hair,
complexion, and eyes.

He was born 1843 in Lionville, the son of Thomas Downing and Mary
(Lightfoot). Married twice, Joseph B. Downing had no children by either wife.
1880 census shows him as "clerk in Locomotive Works." Death certificate shows
death in 1917 of kidney failure. However, he later served as an officer of a
Philadelphia bank.

Letters written by him and his brother, William, to their sister have
recently been discovered and were re-printed in the book, "Dear Sister",
published by the Uwchlan Historical Society.

There was no issue of either of his marriages.
