amos - an african american family
amos, james ralston (1825-1864) in 1852 - james ralston was known as 
"very superior colored man" who made application to dickey for "advice 
as to how he might perfect himself in the christian ministry; son of 
george amos, a negro farmer in uwchlan township, chester co. pa; 
"evidence suggests that james ralston amos, in whose behalf ashmun 
institute was first established, bore to the dickeys the relationship 
later frequently celebrated in the american south as between kindly 
white families and their negro retainers;" james was "living with his 
widowed mother in a house close by the african union methodist 
protestant church house...he would stop in a grove, a hundred yards from 
his house, later the site of ashmun hall...he knelt at a certain stone 
that provided a convenient altar. four years later, when ashmun hall was 
being built on the same site, he noted that the stone of his prayers had 
been placed in the foundation of the edifice (of ashmun institute, later 
known as lincoln university; graduated from lincoln u in 1858. amos, 
thomas h (1826-1869)  both brothers were sent to liberia by the american 
colonization society in 1859-1864 (for james) and 1869 (for thomas)
