  JOSEPH W. FLEMING, Lewistown, Mifflin county, Pa., was born near Menno P.O., 
April 27, 1837, son of Joseph and Catharine (Scott) Fleming.  The father, Joseph 
Fleming, and his wife were life-long residents of Menno township, where they 
owned a farm.  Their children are:  Joseph W.;  and William J., deceased, who 
married Nancy Wills, and had one child.  The mother died and Joseph Fleming 
married Rebecca Gilmore.  Their children are:  Elizabeth;  and Joseph.  Mrs. 
Rebecca Fleming died and Mr. Fleming married Elizabeth Gilmore, her sister.  
They had one child, Frank.  Mr. Fleming was killed by the running away of a 
horse which was hitched to a wagon on his farm.  He was a member of the 
Presbyterian church.  Mrs. Elizabeth Fleming afterwards married George Rakerd.  
Their children are:  James L., an attorney of Lewistown;  Mary W., (Mrs. ____ );  
Alexander, dentist, Bloomfield, Perry county, Pa.;  Catharine, wife of Rev. 
William Hurlbut, of Pottsville, Schuylkill county.  Mrs. Rakerd died in 1868, at 
about fifty years of age.
  Joseph W. Fleming attended the public schools until he was eighteen years of 
age.  He then took courses at the Tuscarora Academy in Juniata county, and at 
Shade Gap Academy.  At the age of twenty-four he began to cultivate the home 
farm for himself.  It was subsequently sold, and he purchased the farm of Joseph 
J. Wills, in Menno township.  In 1871, he left the farm and began business as a 
merchant in Belleville, in which he was successful, but sold out in 1875.  Mr. 
Fleming was nominated for sheriff and was elected by a large majority.  He 
purchased the farm near Lewistown, where he now resides, in 1879.  He is a 
Democrat.  Mr. Fleming belongs to Lodge No. 376, F. and A. M., at McVeytown.
  Joseph W. Fleming was married, December 25, 1861, to Rhoda M., daughter of 
George and Nancy (Taylor) Wilson.  Their children are:  Nancy Taylor;  William 
George;  Niles Scott, deceased;  John Wilson;  Mary Margaret;  and Stella Reed.  
Mr. And Mrs. Fleming are members of the Presbyterian church at Lewistown.
