Brilliant Social Function
Was the Gates-Barker Wedding on Wednesday Evening

The leading social function of the season in Ebensburg was the marriage Wednesday
evening of Miss Lovell Maine Barker, the accomplished and charming daughter of Hon.
and Mrs. A. V. Barker, and Frank S. Gates, son of Hon. and Mrs. John C. Gates, both of
this place.

Elaborate preparations had been made for the event. Beautiful decorations very nicely
arranged adorned the Barker residence. Starting a few minutes before 6 o'clock from
the parental home of the bride, the bridal party proceeded to the First Presbyterian
Church, which was brilliantly illuminated and artistically decorated with large green
palms, ferns, smilax and white chrysanthemums, where the wedding ceremony was
solemnized, promptly at 6 o'clock by the Rev. Samuel G. Craig, pastor of the
Presbyterian Church.

The bride was gowned in a beautiful white duchess messaline trimmed with delicate
lace; wearing a flowing veil of white tulle with lilies of the valley and carried a bouquet.
Mrs. Isabel Baer, of York, Pa., a former schoolmate of Miss Lovell, was matron of honor.
The bride's maids were Miss Gertrude Boyer of Pine Grove; Miss Florence Bertolette of
Mauch Chunk, Pa; Miss Helen Barker, a sister of the bride, now at Wilson College and
Miss Fannie Lloyd of Ebensburg, all gowned alike in white liberty silk with yellow sashes
and all carried chrysanthemums of the same color. Little Barbara Barker, a niece of the
bride, and her little companion, Isabella Tompkins, acted as flower girls.

Frank S. Gates, the bridegroom, was attended by Fred D. Barker, Esq., a brother of the
bride, as best man. Mrs. E. H. Davis of this place presided at the organ and rendered
the wedding march. James E. Ferguson of Philadelphia, W. M. Heidelbaugh of
Lancaster, John L. Elder Jr. and Alvin W. Evans of Ebensburg were the ushers. The
latter two are fraternal brothers of the bridegroom. The bride was given away by her
father, the Hon. A. V. Barker.

The wedding guests numbered about 100 and the scene was exceedingly beautiful.
Immediately after Rev. Samuel G. Craig pronounced the ceremony, the bridal party,
together with a large number of invited guests, returned to the residence of the Hon. A.
V. Barker on Center street where a reception for the bride and groom took place,
followed by the wedding dinner.

During and following the dinner, Findley's Johnstown orchestra furnished excellent music
until eleven o'clock p.m. at which hour a special train, in waiting at the depot, departed
with the happy bride and groom and a number of the bridal party for Cresson. At
Cresson the bride and groom boarded a late train westward on a honeymoon trip to
Denver, Colorado via Ft. Wayne and Chicago, which will extend over three weeks.

After the departure of the newly-wedded couple, a dance was given in the Opera House
in honor of the remaining guests and was a very enjoyable affair.

The house guests were: Mrs. Walter Fosnot, Lewistown, Pa; Miss Margaret and Miss
Gertrude Boyer, Pine Grove, Pa.; Miss Florence Bertolette, Mauch Chunk, Pa.; Miss
Marion Himmelright, Tyrone, Pa.; Miss Annie Spicer, Williamsport, Pa.; Miss Gene Smith,
Pittsburg, Pa.; Miss Emma and Miss Edna Turnbach, Philipsburg, Pa.; Miss Elizabeth
Brimmey, Lancaster, Pa.; Mr. L. Shallenberg, Latrobe, Pa.; Mr. William Heidelbaugh,
Lancaster, Pa.; and Mr. James Ferguson, Philadelphia, Pa.

The following out-of-town guests were present: Mrs. Isabella Jones of Delta, Pa.; Mrs.
Judge Bell, Mrs. O. H. Hewit, Mrs. Harry Hewit, Mr. and Mrs. William Bosler, Miss
Margaret B. Mitchell, Miss Mary Hewit, Miss Mary Duncan, Miss Martha Duncan, Miss
Margaret Dean, Miss Roberta Bell, Miss Elizabeth Bell, Miss Bess Over; Dennison
Hartman, and Jno. Brotherlin of Hollidaysburg; H. W. Storey, Esq.; Mr. and Mrs. Jno. H.
Brown; Mrs. J. M. Murdock, Mrs. Fred Krebs; Mrs. James Ellis; Miss Myrtle Walters; Miss
Margaret Krebs; Miss Winnie Jones; Miss Ethel Zimmerman and Miss Zitella Wertz of
Johnstown; Mrs. Dudley Easby of South Fork.; Mr. and Mrs. Snyder of Cresson; Mr. and
Mrs. Hegerty of Coalport, Miss Harley of Clearfield.

The bride is one of the society leaders of Ebensburg and a highly accomplished young
lady. She is a graduate of Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., and later graduated from
the National Park Seminary, Washington, D. C. Mr. Gates also is very popular in
Ebensburg and vicinity. He is a civil engineer graduate from Pennsylvania State College
and is at present connected with the PRR, being located at Cresson, where he is held in
high esteem by the people.

Upon their return to Ebensburg, Mr. and Mrs. Gates will reside with the bride's parents,
the Hon. and Mrs. A. V. Barker.

Miss Barker was made the recipient of many beautiful presents which have been neatly
arranged in the den of the Barker residence.

The Hon. John C. Gates, the father of the bridegroom, has presented the happy young
couple with a fine building lot on Horner street, Ebensburg.

Both bride and bridegroom have a host of friends both in Ebensburg and out of town
who join in wishing them a long and happy married career.
