Robert F. Chappell, 83, of 505 Edgewood Ave. died at 7:45 
p.m. on May 5, 1990, in Jameson Memorial Hospital following 
a one-month illness. A native of New Castle, he was born May 
31, 1906, to Frank and Hannah Fleet Chappell. He married the 
former Melissa M. McCreary on Nov. 27, 1930, and she 
survives. Mr. Chappell had been employed in the tool and die 
department of the Johnson Bronze Co. He also owned and 
operated the former Chappell's Sunday School and Church 
Supplies.  He belonged to the Christian Business Men's 
Association and was a charter member of Christian Book 
Sellers Association. An active member of First Alliance 
Church and its Cecelia Lewis Bible Class, he was a former 
trustee and church clerk. As a member of the Gideons, Mr. 
Chappell was instrumental in the organization of the New 
Castle Gideon Camp. Additionally, he belonged to the 
American Association of Retired Persons, served as vice 
president of Peniel Holiness Association and was director of 
Western Pennsylvania Bible Conference. Other survivors 
include a daughter Mrs. Roger (Jean) Hicks of Mobile, Ala,; 
a sister, Mrs. Frances Thomas of New Castle; and two 
grandchildren. A sister, Anna Hoyland, preceded him in 
death. Calling hours are Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday 
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral 
Home, 2429 Wilmington Road. Services will be conducted 
Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Alliance Church, Mission Meade 
Drive, by the Rev. Jerry McCauley, pastor. Interment will be 
in Oak Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to 
the Gideons, the City Rescue Mission or First Alliance 
Church.
