The New Castle News, New Castle, PA, 04-27-1895
Lewis C. McCreary, a well known citizen of this place, died
Friday, April 26, aged 48 years. Mr. McCreary was employed
as a teamster for Jesse Hamilton and was at work last
Monday. Tuesday he was taken ill with the pneumonia in its
worst form and died Friday as stated above. He was born in
North Beaver township in 1847. When the war broke out,
although he was only 14 years of age, he tried to enlist but
was refused. In 1864, when he was 17 years of age, he again
offered his services but was refused on account of his age.
Nothing daunted, he went to New Brighton and there enlisted
in Co. G. First Pa. Light Art. and served during the
remainder of the war. He leaves a wife and two children to
mourn his loss and they have the sympathy of the entire
community in their sad bereavement. Funeral services will
be held Sunday from his late residence, 161 Shenango street,
at 4:30 o'clock. Interment in Greennwood cemetery. Carriages
from Offutt, White & Co.'s at 3:30 p.m. By request all old
soldiers, who can do so, will assemble at New Castle Post
room at three o'clock p.m. and attend the funeral in a body.
It is earnestly hoped that every old soldier will be
present to tender this last token of respect for one of our
late comrades. By Order of the Commander, Thomas McBride,
Adjutant.

*Note: In the 1850 PA Census for North Beaver Twp.,
Lawrence Co., PA there is a Lewis C. McCreary, age 3, (born
1847), living with an Elizabeth and John Hope.
