  John Beatty Bratton of Carlisle, born in Mifflintown, Juniata Co. in 1817, the 
  son of William and Lucretia (Gallaher) Bratton. 
  
  Additional Comments:
  John was the former owner, publisher and editor of the Carlisle American 
  Volunteer newspaper which he purchased with Jerome Boyer who left a year 
  later. John was the owner, editor and publisher of other Carlisle and 
  Harrisburg, PA area publications.  He was a municipal office holder in 
  Carlisle, including a member of the city council, the school board and served 
  as its president for at least one term.  He was appointed Postmaster of 
  Carlisle by President Pierce.  John was solidly involved in Cumberland County 
  politics having run unsuccessfully for the U. S. Congress and the U. S. Senate 
  and was well known for his often abrasive and firey editorials about his 
  opponents and other political happenings in the area.  He was married to Mary 
  Ellen Boyer.
