Another Pioneer Gone Home
Mrs. Clarissa Vrooman Lewis was born in Schenectady, N. Y. November 13, 1799.
She was married to Mr. John Lewis at the same place December 24th 1816, and
moved to Prattsburgh the 27th of July, 1819. With her husband she was among
the pioneers to clear land on the west hills of Prattsburgh, build a home, and
rear about them a family of children that have for many years been esteemed
and respected in whatever community is favored to call them citizens.
Thirty-five years ago they moved to the village to live. At the death of Mr.
Lewis in August 1876, she made her home with the youngest daughter, Mrs. H. A.
Johnson, with whom she moved to Penn Yan two years later. Every attention and
care was bestowed upon her in old age. She suffered from a stroke of paralysis
on Friday, October 12th and died October 26th, 1888. Her remains were brought
to Prattsburgh for burial, with appropriate services at the Presbyterian
Church. All the children now living were present as follows: Mrs. H. H.
Foskett, of Pulteney, John V. Lewis of Naples, B. V. Lewis, of Prattsburgh, S.
G. Lewis, of Bath, Mrs. J. M. Henderson of Buffalo and Mrs. Johnson of Penn
Yan, who with their husbands, wives, and children mourn a great loss in one of
the most lovable of women.
