JOHN J. HUGHES is the son of John and Catharine (Dollard) Hughes, and was born 
February 14, 1862, in Juniata township, Bedford county, Pennsylvania. Michael 
Hughes, grandfather, was a native of Ireland, whence he emigrated [sic] to 
America and located on a farm in what is now Juniata township, Bedford county; 
he followed the avocation of a farmer all his life. In politics he was a staunch 
democrat.
     John Hughes, father, was born in Juniata township, Bedford county, June 15, 
1829. He has resided all his life in the above county, and now claims his 
residence in the town of Bedford. From 1862 until 1872 he was engaged in 
operating a distillery, but since 1886 he has adopted and followed the pursuits 
of a farmer. In religious belief he is a member of the Roman Catholic church, 
and politically is identified with the Democratic party. He married Catharine 
Dollard, who was born in Ireland in 1828. Their marriage resulted in the birth 
of nine children.
     John J. Hughes was educated in the common schools and summer normals of 
Bedford county. On leaving school he learned the distillery business with his 
father, and remained with him in business for some time. In 1878 he removed to 
Garrett county, Maryland, and for about one year operated a distillery. He then 
returned to Bedford county, where he remained until 1883. In the latter year he 
went to North Dakota, where he followed farming. Later he removed to Omaha, 
Nebraska, where he was employed in a smelting works. After an extended trip 
through the west he returned to Bedford county, and in 1886 located on a farm in 
Bedford township, where he remained until 1890; in the latter year he removed to 
Walnut Grove, Stony Creek township, Cambria county, and built a distillery, 
which he finished and began to operate in 1891. His distillery has a capacity of 
seventy-two gallons a day, which he disposes of chiefly to the Johnstown trade. 
He is identified with the Democratic party, as has been the family for three 
generations.
     He married Miss Maggie Grumling, a daughter of John Grumling, of Cambria 
county, and to their union one child has been born, James Vincent.
