ARTHUR L. DIMOND, owner and proprietor of the hotel "Ehrenfeld," and a member of
the Star Bottling company of South Fork, is the oldest son and child of Charles
A. and Malinda C. (Cullen) Dimond, and was born in Croyle township, Cambria
county, Pennsylvania, November 1, 1869. The Dimonds are of Irish descent, and
Mr. Dimond's great-grandfather was a native of Ireland, and settled near
Baltimore, Maryland, where his son, Casper Dimond, was born and reared.
Casper Dimond came to what is now Croyle township, where he was a neighbor
to the Mr. Croyle after whom the township was named. He purchased seventy acres
of land, to which he afterward added by additional purchases. He was a member of
the Catholic church. He married and had four children: Stephen, Michael, Mary
(Mrs. Jacob Harper), and Charles A., the father of the subject of this sketch.
Charles A. Dimond was born in 1846, on the Croyle township farm, and after
attaining his majority engaged in the butchering business at Summer Hill, where
he also opened a general mercantile store and a large coal-yard. In a few years
he branched out, and now, in addition to his meat market, store and coal-yard at
Summer Hill, he has meat markets and stores at North Branch, South Fork, Dunlo
and Ehrenfeld. He is one of the active and substantial business men of the
county. Mr. Dimond is a member of the Catholic church. He married Malinda C.
Cullen, whose father was the superintendent of the old Portage railroad. Their
children are: Arthur L., Minnie, Elmer, Celia, Charles O., Blanche and Zeta.
Arthur L. Dimond was reared on the farm, received a good common school
education, and engaged in the mercantile business with his father, with whom he
remained until 1892. In that year he came to Ehrenfeld and purchased the hotel
"Ehrenfeld," which he has conducted ever since. This hotel is a fine two-story
building of fourteen rooms, fitted up in modern style with all late improvements
and accommodations. It is well patronized by the traveling public, and
especially by commercial men, who find the best of accommodations for their
convenience. Mr. Dimond is an active and successful business man like his
father. He owns the Merchants' Hotel of South Fork, and also a large store
building there. He is the principal owner of the Star Bottling company of South
Fork, who manufacture all kinds of soft drinks, and are wholesale dealers in
cigars, tobacco, flasks and corks. This company has been very successful, and
does a large business in Cambria and adjoining counties. Mr. Dimond is
energetic, active and thorough-going in whatever he engages, and, although but
young in years, has already achieved remarkable business success. He is pre-
eminently a business man, yet is pleasant, companionable and well-informed on
the current issues of the day. He is a member of the Catholic church.
On July 18, 1893, Mr. Dimond was united in marriage with Margaret Hartman,
a daughter of Philip Hartman. Mr. and Mrs. Dimond have one child, a daughter,
named Sarah Genevieve.
