Fatal Accident at Hillside Colliery

Hugh Graham and Patric Morahan Killed by Runaway Trip Yesterday



  Hugh Graham was killed and Patric Morahan badly crushed in an accident at the

Erie shaft of the Hillside Coal Co, at Avoca yesterday morning.  hey were both 

employed as footmen, and a runaway trip of loaded cars swept them in the 

sump, instantly killing Graham and crushing Morahan between the timbers.

  The accident happened shortly after work was commenced yesterday morning. 

Graham's body was so badly crushed and mangled that it was unrecognizable 

after it was taken from the wreck.  It was removed to the home of his sister-

in-law, Mrs. Warren, of Packer St, Avoca, with whom he boarded.  He was 40 

years old and unmarried.  Morahan, the other footman, lives with his mother 

in Avoca.

  Morahan died shortly after being taken to his home.

  Graham's funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the residence of 

his sister, Mrs. Warren.

  Mr. Morahan was a member of St. Aloysius, C.B.M.A. and was 44years old.  He 

had resided in Avoca nearly all his life.  He is survived by a mother and the 

following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Thos O'Brien, Mrs. Michael Fitzgibbons, 

of the West Side; Alice A., a teacher in No 3 school, Avoca and John, Thomas 

and Lawrence of that place.  The funeral will take place on Thursday morning 

at 9 o'clock.  A high mass of requiem will be celebrated in St Mary's church. 

Interment in St Mary's cemetery.
