  MAYPORT RESIDENT DIES FROM ACCIDENT
Injuries received last week while engaged in threshing in the vicinity of
Mayport, Pa., proved fatal to Oliver J. Shaffer, a resident of that community,
who succumbed Sunday, Aug. 25th, 1929, at his home. Mr. Shaffer was attempting
to crank the tractor, and in some manner was struck in the abdomen, by the
crank, when the motor backfired. His death followed within a few days.
Oliver J. Shaffer was born March 1st, 1874, in Armstrong county, and was a son
of Lewis and Caroline (Miller) Shaffer. He was aged 55 years, 5 months and 24
days. On March 11, 1897, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Michael, and to
this union thirteen children were born, seven having preceded their father in
  death.  Those who survive are:  Paul and Mrs. Reed Doverspike, of Mayport;
Kenneth, Alberta and Florence, who live at home; Mrs. Samuel Shirey, of near
Pierce. He also leaves on brother and a number of sisters; Chas. E. Shaffer, of
near Ringgold; Mrs. E. Shaffer, of near Ringgold; Mrs. Emanuel Dinger, of North
Freedom; Mrs. Maggie Brocious, Mrs. Ezra Weaver, Mrs. John V. Snyder and Mrs.
Webster Hepler, all of Timblin; Mrs. R.C. Boozer of Mt. Tabor; Mrs. Perry
Helpler and Mrs. Will sherry of New Bethlehem. He is also survived by his wife.
   One sister is dead.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Evangelical church for more than thirty years,
and remained faithful until death. He was always active and served several
years as superintendent of the Sunday school, teaching almost continuously for
many years, one of the classes. His loss to the church is beyond expression.
He was tenderly devoted to his family, and was staunchly established with his
friends and neighbors. Those who survive have the sympathy of the entire
community in this time of sorrow.
On Wednesday morning funeral services were conducted in the North Freedom
church by the Rev. Kaufman, and interment, under the direction of H.H. Sloan,
was made in Mt. Tabor cemetery.
