SKELETON OF POLE FOUND WEDNESDAY

Special to the Tribune.
Bedford, August 9. - The skeleton of an aged Pole was the gruesome
discovery of George Wentz on his land between Weyant and Pavia, this county,
on Wednesday of this week, while he was cleaning the tract preparatory to
erecting a bungalow. The body was identified by William Barefoot as that of
a Polish coal miner about 70 years old, who had stopped at his house early in
April, at the time of the deep snow, and who gave his name as Coglow. A
small testament and other papers found upon the body gave evidence that his
name was Victor Coglow and that he has two sons and a daughter living in this
country.
Mr. Wentz sold the timber on this small tract and it had been cut early in
the spring. A very large hemlock had been uprooted and the trunk later
removed, the stump with its massive roots bending over in such manner that it
provided a shelter under which the aged man crept. Death had evidently
occurred during his rest, as the body was in a comfortable position, the head
being pillowed upon the folded arms and his testament placed behind his head,
against a part of the stump. The clothing was of fairly good quality and the
pack which he carried when last seen, as well as a lunch prepared by Mrs.
Barefoot, laid beside him. The flesh had decayed but the skeleton was
intact. The tops of several other trees had been removed and thrown upon the
uprooted tree by lumberman without the hiding place of the body being
discovered.
Mr. Wentz had been in that vicinity some time before but suspected nothing.
As he was cutting away the weeks preparing to have the stump removed he made
the discovery.
At an inquest held evidence developed that several people had seen the old
man at the time of the April snow and one man had seen him during the
afternoon sitting by the road asleep, there being about six inches of snow at
the time. Mr. Barefoot identified the body as that of the miner who stopped
with him and was on his way across the mountain toward Cambria county. The
body was interred yesterday in the cemetery at Pavia.
