Indiana Progress 10-14-1896
"William R. Black Dead-The Former Editor of the "Progress" Dies at Buffalo
Wm. R. Black, of Co. G, 67th PA Vols., died at Buffalo, N.Y., on Monday,
October 5, 1896, in the 54th year of his age. He was well known in this
county. Mr. Black enlisted in his country's service October 9, 1862, in the
19th year of his age. He was a prisoner of war from June 15 to July 25, 1863.
He lost a leg in the engagement at Sailors Creek, Va., just before the close
of the war, and was in the hospital when his regiment mustered out.
After the close of the war he read law with Judge Harry White and was admitted
to the practice of law in the courts of Indiana county. In 1868 he was elected
Register and Recorder and Clerk of the Orphans' Court, serving two terms of
three years each. In March 1880 he purchased the "Indiana Progress" from the
late R.M. Birkman and conducted it until the spring of 1887 when he sold the
plant to the present owner. He was afterwards elected Justice of the Peace. In
the summer of 1888 he left this county. He is survived by his wife, who lives
here, and two daughters, Miss Mary, of the pension department, Pittsburg, and
Mrs. Musa Robinson, of Buffalo, N.Y.
General Harry White, in speaking of his deceased comrade, pays him the
following tribute: "He was a brave soldier and lost his limb while holding
aloft the colors of his country."
