STRICKEN DEAD IN CHURCH

DAVID BLACK, an old and well known citizen of this place, was stricken
dead in the U.B.church last Sunday evening while preparing the church for
the evening worship. He had been in poor health for several months with
heart trouble and was feeling rather worse on Sunday than usual, being
scarcely able to participate in Sunday school and other church services,
but always punctual, he was performing his duties as sexton when the heart
suddenly failed to perform its functions and he fell and expired in a few
minutes.

He leaves to morn a loving wife, a brother and two sisters. His children
are James E., married and living near Richmond, Ella E, married to John
TOOKE, of this place, and Clark E., married and living at Patton, and he
was the great grandfather of twelve children. He was a kind and loving
parent, always ready with a kind word and a loving smile.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in the second Regiment
of six month volunteers and at the expiration of the term of enlistment
he reinlisted in Co. C, 206th Pennsylvania Volunteers and served until
the close of the war.

He had been an active G A R man for years, was a member of the Presbyterian
church, and was laid to rest in the Mahaffey cemetery with G A R ceremony
on Tuesday evening after services in the U. B. church conducted by Rev.
C Kahler. - Mahaffey Gazette

Mr. Black was a former resident of this county, has many relatives in the
northeastern part of the county, and was well known to many of our readers.

*** The date on the back of this clipping is July 19, 1901 which was Friday.
It appears David died on Sunday, July 14, 1901. On the back, the clipping
has the bottom portion of the following letters D E P E at the top of the
page. This is part of the newspapers name(possibly INDEPENDENT); however,
I have been unable to determine which paper it is. If you have any ideas,
please let me know at callmemum@hotmail.com.
