JAMES BENCE, aged more than 80 years, and one of the prominent residents of

the county, died at his home in Marion Center early Thursday morning with a

complication of diseases. He was the eldest son of Samuel and Elizabeth

Bence and was born in Rayne Township on New Year's day, 1844. He was a

successful farmer and followed that work until eight years ago when he

retired and located in Marion Center. He was a devout member of the Bethel

Lutheran church since early life and served as a deacon and elder of the

congregation for many years. He was a veteran of the Civil was, enlisting in

Co.C. 206th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in August, 1864, and served

until the close of the war. He was a member of John Pollock Post G.A.R., of

Marion Center. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Minerva Short Bence, and these

children: Mrs. F.B. Longwill of Indiana; Harry E. Bence, of Marion Center;

John L. Bence, of near Penn Run; Charles L. and J. Luther Bence of

Dixonville; Mrs. S.G. Haer, of Rayne Township; Clarence D. Bence of

Dixonville; Logan C, Bence of Clymer; Miss Genevieve Bence of Pittsburgh;

Mrs. A.t. Cox, of Indiana; Mrs. James Gilhousen, of Home, and Mrs. Harry L.

Fyock, of Philadelphia. He also leaves a brother, John D. Bence of Indiana,

and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Boucher, of Beaverdale, and Mrs. Scott Lightcap

of East Mahoning township. Funeral services were conducted in the Lutheran

church near Dixonville, on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, by Rev. Edmonds

and Alter of Marion Center. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
