DELAWARE COUNTY AMERICAN

CASUALTIES IN THE NINETY SEVENTH REGIMENT. - LOSS OF TWO DELAWARE COUNTY
SOLDIERS. - On the night of the 4th instant, an encounter occurred between
a detachment from the 100th N.Y., Volunteers and the 97th Pa. Volunteers,
which resulted in the death of the leader of the party and two members -
Joseph Russell, of Birmingham, and Joseph L. << Eyre>> , of Bethel, both of
Company D, Capt. Mendinhall. They party, under the command of Capt. Paine,
was on a scout, and landed on the upper portion of Morris Island, leaving a
guard of eight men of the 97th on the picket boat, whilst the main body
proceeded into the interior. The party had not proceeded far before it was
met by an overwhelming force of the enemy, by whom it was fired upon,
killing Capt. Paine instantly, the remainder being compelled to surrender
themselves as prisoners of war. The party in the boat fired a volley at the
enemy and received one in return, which was attended with the melancholy
result as stated, the remainder of the men in the boat, by pushing off escaping
the fate of their less fortunate comrades. Capt. Paine is reported as having
been a most gallant officer, and his death is deeply deplored.
