The Christian Advocate - Thursday, March 31, 1904, Page 527
John SPAHR was born in Fallowfield Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania,
February 26, 1817, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah E. RODGERS,
near Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania, January 24, 1904. He was
married February 14, 1839, to Lucy Ann SCOTT, who died some years ago. Eight
children were given to them, seven of whom survive. Brother Spahr was
converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church when but sixteen years
of age. He served the church in an official capacity as leader, Sunday School
superintendent, steward, trustee, and Exhorter for many years. His house was
always open to the ministers, and many have enjoyed its warm hospitality. His
intelligence and remarkable buoyancy of spirit, made him a delightful host and
companion. He was a man of intense earnestness and wonderfully gifted in
prayer. During the greater part of his life he was a power in the church which
he ardently loved and faithfully served. For some years the infirmities of age
prevented active participation in church work, but his interest remained keen.
He died in sure and certain hope of a blessed immortality. He was buried in
the old Howe Cemetery in Charleroi, and almost at the very spot where seventy
years ago he sought and found Christ. By his own request, made many years ago,
the funeral sermon was preached by his old-time friend and pastor, the
writer. Rev. James MECHEM
