James A. Caldwell, 71, of Hickory died Wednesday, November 17, 1993, in his home
following a brief illness.  He was born July 16, 1922 in Cross Creek Township, a
son of James M. and Bessie Miller Caldwell.  Mr. Caldwell was a member of the
Hickory United Presbyterian Church.  He was a graduate of Hickory High School. 
During World War II, he served with the Army in the European Theater.  Mr.
Caldwell was employed by Columbia Gas Co., first in the Hickory office and then
in the Bethel Park office.  He retired in 1983.  He was a lifetime member of the
Hickory Volunteer Fire Department and was superintendent of Mt. Prospect
Cemetery for 33 years.  Mr. Caldwell received the Outstanding Citizen Award at
the most recent Apple Festival in Hickory.  On January 8, 1946, in Hickory, he
married Mabel Tustin Caldwell, who survives.  Also surviving are two sons, Gary
Caldwell of Paris, France and Larry Caldwell of Washington; a daughter Cathy
Mitchell of Latrobe; five grandchildren, Sheri, Amy, James, Heath and Alexa; two
sisters Mildred Nichols of Washington and Helen Caldwell of Hickory.

Friends of James A. Caldwell of Hickory, who died Wednesday, November 17, 1993,
will be received from 2 to 3 and 7 to 9, Friday at Piatt and Barnhill Funveral
Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, PA where services will be held at 11a.m.
Saturday, November 20, with the Rev. Stuart D. Broberg officiating.  Internment
in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.  The family suggests donations to a hospice
or the the Hickory Volunteer Fire Department.
