The Ligonier Echo (Ligonier, Pennsylvania) 18 Aug 1920
Alex. M. Bitner, a native of Ligonier Valley and who always lived in the valley
excepting a few years in Latrobe, a veteran of the Civil War who served nearly three
years in the service, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 15, 1920, at 3:15
o'clock, of acute indigestion causing heart failure. He had been in rather delicate
health for some time but was able to walk about town. He was aged 76 years, 5 months
and 10 days. He died at his home on West Main street. He is survived by his widow,
two sons, Clarence of Pittsburgh, and Daniel O. of Johnstown, and by one daughter,
Miss Della, at home, a successful school teacher of Allegheny county, and by two
grandchildren. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 in St.
James Lutheran Church of which he was a lifelong and faithful member, conducted by
Rev. L. J. Baker, pastor of the Latrobe Lutheran church, assisted by Rev. A. L.
Kenyon, pastor of the local U. P. church. Thirteen of the Civil War veterans
attended the services in the church and accompanied the body to its last resting
place. The interment was made in the Valley cemetery near Ligonier.
