Pioneer Matron Passes Monday

Mrs. Elizabeth M. Applegate, 82, pioneer resident of Payette since 1869, 
passed away in this city last Monday evening following a protracted illness. 
Services were held on Wednesday of this week at the Landon-Shaffer chapel, 
with Rev. Paul Faithouse officiating and interment was made in the Applegate 
cemetery at New Plymouth.

Deceased was born Nov. 10, 1865 at Winona, Miss. With her parents and one 
sister she went to Ogden, Utah on the first railroad train entering that city. 
The family made the trip on from Ogden to Boise and located near Emmett, this 
trip being made by stage coach. She grew to womanhood in the Payette Valley 
and married John Applegate at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. C. Johnson, on 
Nov. 4, 1883. Mrs. Applegate was a member of the Methodist church. Her 
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel King helped to start the first church of that 
denomination in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Applegate celebrated their sixty-third 
wedding anniversary on November fourth last year.

Deceased is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Delia Pence and Mrs. 
Nellie Manis, Payette; two sons, Jim Applegate, Emmett and Sam Applegate, 
Payette; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. W. C. 
Johnson, sister, passed away at the age of 89 last August.
