Mr. S.F. Bowden Died at Ray City, Oct. 2
(Contributed by Rev. T.W. Branch)
Mr. S.F. Bowden died at his home in Ray City Monday a.m., October 2,
1933. His health had been bad for a year or more but was able to be up until
just a few days before his death. In the passing away of Bro. Bowden we have
lost an esteemed citizen, a friend to all men, a friend to the church, a friend
to God. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved.
May the God of love and mercy comfort their broken hearts, and cause
them to rejoice in his eternal gain.
He was born Jan. 15, 1863, married Miss Mary Yancy, to this union nine
children were born. Seven of which are still living. Mrs. Bowden died in the
year 1919, two of the children preceded their mother to the grave.
The following children survived to mourn his loss: Mr. Hayne Bowden,
Jacksonville, Fla.; S.C. Bowden, Wall Hill, N.Y.; W.R. Bowden, Tifton, Ga.; A.T.
Bowden, Tifton, Ga.; Mrs. J.J. Chamblis, Alapaha, Ga.; Mrs. Marietta Henderson,
Tifton, Ga.; and his wife by a second marriage who was Miss Rosetta Sutton and
two brothers, Mr. J.J. Bowden, Pinehurst, Ga.; and Mr. Lawson Bowden, Homer,
Ga.; four sisters: Mrs. John Welchel, Homer, Ga.; Mrs. Nancy Griffin, Homer,
Ga.; Mrs. Lucy Morgan, Baldwin, Ga.; and Mrs. Blanche Alexander, Homer, Ga.
The funeral services were conducted at Flat Creek Church. A choir led
by Mr. Wiley Chamblis sang so sweetly, Jesus Lover of My Soul, Where We'll
Never Grow Old, and Asleep in Jesus. Appropriate scripture reading by Rev.
T.W. Branch, Ray City; Prayer by Rev. T.A. Hancock. Short talks were made by
each of the ministers befitting the life of the deceased and his body was laid
to rest.
