Pvt. George McCollum of Lavonia has been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds 
received in his line of duty while serving with the armed forces in France. Pvt. 
McCollum has recovered from his injuries and has returned to duty.

At the request of Private McCollum the award of the Purple Heart was made to his 
wife, Mrs. Frankie McCollum, who lives in Lavonia. The award was made at Lavonia 
on Thursday October 13 by Mrs. Stewart D. Brown, Chairman of the Franklin County 
Chapter of the Home Service Committee.

Pvt. McCollum is a native of Lavonia, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. McCollum of 
Lavonia. His wife is the former Miss Frankie Owen of Westminister, S.C. Pvt. 
McCollum entered the service September 2, 1943. He was in Camp at Ft. Eustic, Va., 
later at Fort Benning, Ga. and Camp McCain, Miss. He went across in August of 
1944. He was at home last in June of 1944.
