Ashland Progress September 10, 1940
Olin Gay Ray, born March 15, 1927, and Paul Edward Ray, born July 16, 1929, sons
of Mr. and Mrs. Overton Ray, 2 miles southwest of Ashland, Alabama, in the
Liberty community. O. R. Ray is the son of the late R. M. Ray. These two boys
were 13 and 11 years old and were in the 7th and 5th grades in school, weighing
98 and 79 pounds. They had four brothers and four sisters.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, they returned from school about noon to assist in the farm
gathering. Being pals they went to pick peas together about a quarter of a mile
south of the home and were instantly killed by lightning about 3 o'clock p.m.
and when found were about thirty feet apart.
The writer conducted the double funeral at Liberty and the crowd was large,
taking about 4 minutes to pass in review of the bodies.
"All things work together for good to them who love the Lord," and most
assuredly that includes this sad occurrence, which draws this family much closer
together and makes Heaven more precious since Olen and Paul are there. Also, it
has caused all people for miles around to stop in their mad rush here in this
world to come to the rescue of this grief-stricken family and drop a sympathetic
tear and breathe a silent prayer. Neither did they stop at that, but this writer
is told that $160 or more in cash has been given to help with the necessary
expense. "All this has shown that human sympathy must be from our loving
Heavenly Father and still abounds in this community, helping to heal this wound
and make it possible, by the help of God, for these parents and children to
carry on.
The family and writer extend profound thanks and gratitude to everyone that has
contributed in any way and hereby pray the blessings upon them. S. C. Ray,
Pastor, Liberty Baptist Church.
