John M. APPLEBY, 66, 53 Ponds Edge Drive, Downingtown, died Tuesday,
July 9, 2002, at Brandywine Hospital, Coatesville. Born Sept. 10, 1935,
in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Thomas and Verna (Kyper)
Appleby. He was the husband of Marjory Appleby with whom he shared 27
years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons,
Jarrett B. Appleby, Greenwood Village, Colo. and Brian K. Appleby,
Reading; one daughter, Pamela L. Appleby, Greenwood Village, Colo., and
two grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers and one sister:
Thomas Appleby, Somers Point, N.J.; Robert Appleby, Hesston; David
Appleby, Palmyra; Duncan Appleby, Camp Hill; Landry Appleby, Annville
and Ardith Hicks, Mount Union. A son, Tristan S. Appleby, preceded him
in death. Mr. Appleby was a 1953 graduated of Huntingdon High School
where he was the quarterback of the football team. He also played
basketball. Following one year at Juniata College, he enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of 2nd lieutenant.
He then attended Millersville University where he played football and
graduated with a BS in education. He earned a master's degree in
education from West Chester University in 1971 and principal
certification from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Appleby was
employed as a teacher of social studies and coach of football,
basketball and track at Downingtown High School for 40 years before
retiring in 1997. He also served as assistant principal and department
head and he was the chief negotiator for the Downingtown Area Education
Association. A devoted family man, he enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading
about American history and spending tine with his grandchildren. A
funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at
Central Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Uwchlan Avenue, Downingtown.
Interment will be made in Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery,
Glenmoore.
