Joseph J. APPLEBY, 87, of the Presbyterian Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of 516 E. Atlantic Ave., Altoona, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Presbyterian Home following an extended illness. Born July 24, 1915, in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Herbert N. and Lottie G. (Vaughn) Appleby. He was united in marriage to the former Florine M, Grove Oct. 9, 1937, in Hagerstown, Md. Mrs. Appleby preceded him in death Oct. 20, 2002. He is survived by one son, Dennis Appleby of Hollidaysburg; and two daughters, Mrs. Russell (Loretta) Greaser of Hollidaysburg; and Mrs. Richard (Carole) Dodson of Altoona. There are six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One sister, Thelma Hetrick of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, survives. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters; Brady Appleby, Raymond Appleby, Charles Appleby, Mary Everett and Clara Snyder. Mr. Appleby was a former member of Mount Nebo United Brethren Church. He attended Aughwick School, Shirleysburg. He retired from Conrail May 9, 1979, as a conductor/brakeman in the Middle Division. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Presbyterian Home Chapel, 220 Newry St., Hollidaysburg, with Pastor Paul Pease officiating. Interment will be made in Alto Reste Park, Altoona.
