Barbara (Stevens) BAXTER, 70, of Briarwood, Walker Twp. Huntingdon, died
at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at UPMC Montefiore, Pittsburgh.
Born April 9, 1933, in Wildwood Heights, N.J., she was the daughter of
the late Thomas Alfred and Hedwig (Guyer) Stevens. She was united in
marriage to Craig Baxter, May 28, 1984, at Saint John's Episcopal Church
in Carlisle. She is survived by her husband at home; a stepson, William
A. Wishmeyer of Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands; and her husband's
children, Craig Baxter II and Louise S. Baxter, both of McLean, Va. She
is survived by a brother, Thomas S. Stevens, and his wife, Marjorie E.
Stevens, of Wilmington, Del,. and Cape May, N.J., as well as their
children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joan
G. Stevens. Mrs. Baxter was a member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian
Church, where she served as a trustee. She was a member of the
Huntingdon County Bar Association and in 1994, she was the first woman
to be elected president of the association. she was a member of the
Huntingdon Rotary Club, and was therein selected as a Paul Harris
Fellow. In addition, Mrs. Baxter was a member of the Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR) and was a direct descendant of pilgrim John
Howland. She served on the advisory council of the Huntingdon County
Head Start Program and was a past president and current member of the
board of directors of Huntingdon House. Mrs. Baxter graduated from Cape
May High School, New Jersey, with the Class of 1951 and from the
University of Pa. in 1955. While at Penn, she was a member of the Mortar
Board, as honor society in the College for Women, and was also named the
recipient of the Delta Dalta Dalta Award for outstanding service to the
college. In 1957, she received a master's degree in higher education
administration from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. She obtained
her law degree from the Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, in 1983. From
1957 to 1959, she was the assistant coordinator of student activities at
Southern Illinois University. In 1959, she became dean of women at
Dickinson College, a post she held until 1967. Subsequently, she was
employed by Cumberland County, Pa., in the probation office, children's
services and as an attorney and hearing officer in domestic relations
until 1984. In 1984, she began the practice of law in Huntingdon in the
firm now known at Baxter and Kipphan. A memorial service will be held at
the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, Fifth and Mifflin streets,
Huntingdon, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, with the Revs. Leslie Papp and
Richard E. Gardiner officiating. A committal service will be held at the
Cold Spring Presbyterian Church in Cape May. N.J., at 11 a.m. Saturday,
March 27. Interment will be made in Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery,
Cape May, N.J.
